My columns for the Herald (Sharon, Pa.) have their genesis in the childhood days I spent in the Shenango Valley. Both of my parents were born in Mercer County, and I grew up not far away, just across the Ohio line, so most weekends we visited family and friends in the valley. My stories suggest how long-forgotten events and relationships, perhaps evidenced only by a yellowed newspaper clipping lying at the bottom of a shoe box, or by a framed photo of a distant relative, have an impact on my life today. When I find a connection among seemingly disparate elements of my past, I know I've got a story.

The best part about writing for the Herald is hearing from my readers. I've heard from people who remember the Shenango Valley as it was in my memories, from cousins I'd lost touch with, and from readers who simply want to introduce themselves. Corresponding with readers allows me to hear what is important to others, thereby expanding my own horizons.

My reviews of the arts have appeared in two periodicals published in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area--the Fairfax Journal and the Review . I've reprinted here my columns for the Review. I covered theater and opera, as well as other performing arts and an art exhibit. For me, the highlight of writing reviews was interviewing composer Carlisle Floyd--at the world premiere of his opera, Cold Sassy Tree .
